Annual CCNW Nurse Leadership Awards
Awards are presented annually at our April CCNW Nursing and Healthcare Workforce Summit.

As a 501©3 non-profit organization, the year-over-year success and positive impact of The Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce, Inc. (CCNW) both within Connecticut and across the country could not be achieved without the dedication, wise counsel, vision, and hard work of our volunteer leadership. It is with this spirit that the CCNW acknowledges and recognizes individuals, groups, and organizations that have “pulled up their sleeves” to support our mission and propel us forward each year.
Below highlights the three awards that will be presented and how to apply to be acknowledged and recognized.

The CCNW Nurse Workforce Development Award
History: This award acknowledges the work done over the past year of a nurse educator in Academia or practice who has amplified the critical importance of the CCNW mission which is to foster collaborations to ensure a highly educated, diverse, and sustainable nursing workforce to support the healthcare needs of Connecticut residents.
Criteria:
Award Amount: $1,000.00 in hopes to be used for continued leadership development activities
Criteria:
- Demonstrates commitment to the mission of CCNW and support of the CCNW staff
- Displays innovative leadership characteristics which have made a positive impact on the nursing workforce development in Connecticut
- Acts as a role model and/or mentor to Connecticut’s future nursing and healthcare leaders
- Inspires and engages others to become active participants in CCNW programs and services
Award Amount: $1,000.00 in hopes to be used for continued leadership development activities

The Jane E. Murdock "Life-Long" Learning Award
History: The Jane E. Murdock "Life-Long" Learning Award was established in 2011. This award acknowledges the work done over the past year of a nurse educator in Academia or practice who has demonstrated knowledge as an Exemplar Nurse Educator who uses best-practices in teaching and learning, incorporated an evidence-based approach to teaching, earned the respect of students and colleagues, and is certified as a Nurse Educator or Professional Development Educator.
Criteria:
Award Amount: $1,000.00 in hopes to be used for continued professional development activities
Criteria:
- Developed innovative and successful programs to address the identified need(s) of students, faculty, and practicing nurses. Examples may include:
- Designing and implementing credit and non-credit programs that are accessible, flexible, and based on adult learning principles,
- Creating, refining and/or revising programs that incorporate technology, AI, and other interactive modalities, and/or
- Delivering programs that enhance the competencies of targeted nursing populations.
- Demonstrated a commitment to teaching. Examples may include:
- Dedication to the profession,
- Sharing expertise via presentation, publications, active in leadership roles, and/or
- Engaged in scholarly work to positively impact teaching and learning.
- Inspired novice and seasoned nurses to pursue additional degrees/continuing education. Examples may include:
- Providing individual and group counseling/mentoring,
- Active engagement in state, regional, and national group events, and/or
- Hosting special focused activities to promote a clinical specialty or academic credential that is in high demand.
Award Amount: $1,000.00 in hopes to be used for continued professional development activities

Selected by the CCNW Board Chair
History: This Excellence Award was established in 2022. The Ruth M. Olson Excellence in Nurse Education Award
Awarded to a nurse who demonstrates:
- Knowledge of the discipline: examples may include: certified as a nurse educator or professional development educator, utilizes best practices and incorporates an evidence-based approach
- A learner-centered teaching style: examples may include innovative, interactive, adaptable, nurturing styles
- Commitment to teaching: dedication to the profession (member of professional organizations CCNW, NLN, NISOD etc.), sharing expertise via presentations, publications, committee membership/chairs
- Success in inspiring students: past and present to pursue additional degrees/continuing education/become active in local and state nursing organizations
- Earned the respect of students and colleagues: peer awards, mentoring of new faculty, regarded as an "expert", and advances the profession & quality of nursing education.
