DIRECTOR

Marie M. Spivey, EdD, RN, MPA
Principal/Consultant, Diversity & Life Skills Coach
SEET, LLC, System for Education, Equity & Transition

As co-chair of the nation's first Regional Health Equity Council created here in New England by the US DHHS Office of Minority Health, Dr. Spivey worked with others to identify and eliminate health disparities, inequities, and their determinants. She is currently a DEI consultant with the CT Department of Children & Families, Carelon Behavioral Health, and several local community-based organizations to provide them with the knowledge and benefits of diversity, equity, and inclusion frameworks based primarily on the Enhanced National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards (CLAS) and the Title VI Civil Rights legislation. From her position as CEO of the Charter Oak Terrace/Rice Heights Health Center, Dr. Spivey joined the CT DPH as its first Bureau Chief of Community Health, and subsequently became Hartford Hospital’s first African American Vice President of Community Involvement.  As a loaned chief executive from the hospital, she launched the Learning Corridor, a campus of four magnet schools and a performing Arts theater. Dr. Spivey also served as Vice President of Health Equity at the CT Hospital Association for several years working with the state’s 28 hospitals to form Diversity Collaborative Teams addressing health equity policies, practices, and procedures in order to better serve their constituents. She is an active Board member of several organizations in addition to The Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce - among them are the Governing and Foundation Boards of the Duncaster Continuing Care Retirement Community, as well as both Goodwin University and Capital Community College’s Nursing Advisory Boards. Over the past 3 1/2 years of the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Spivey’s volunteerism has extended to assisting as a Covid Case Nursing Investigator and educator for the Central CT Health District.
As a Board member, how can you contribute to the mission of CCNW which is to foster collaborations to ensure a highly educated, diverse, and sustainable nursing workforce to support the healthcare needs of CT residents?

As a CCNW Board Member, I share the responsibility to continue to search and recruit highly educated and committed diverse individuals into the nursing fields, and to continue working with organizations and nursing programs to ensure recognition and respect for the knowledge, skills and diverse demographics brought by individuals into the field of nursing.
